The Kabul Tribune (KT) — An Australian court on Wednesday began hearing an appeal by Erin Patterson, who was convicted of murdering three relatives of her estranged husband with a meal containing deadly death cap mushrooms, Reuters reported.
Patterson, 51, was convicted last year of murdering her
mother-in-law, Gail Patterson; father-in-law, Donald Patterson; and Gail’s
sister, Heather Wilkinson, after serving them Beef Wellington laced with
poisonous mushrooms at a 2023 lunch at her home in Leongatha, a town about 135
kilometers (84 miles) southeast of Melbourne.
She was sentenced to life in prison with a non-parole period
of 33 years, one of the longest sentences imposed on a woman in Australia.
Patterson maintained her innocence throughout the trial,
saying the deaths were accidental.
Her appeal is based on several grounds, including claims
that certain evidence should not have been admitted, that she was subjected to
unfair cross-examination and that the jury may have been prejudiced after being
housed at the same hotel as members of the media.
Victoria’s Court of Appeal in Melbourne is also scheduled to
hear a separate appeal by prosecutors, who argue that Patterson’s sentence was
inadequate.
A jury also found Patterson guilty of attempting to murder
Ian Wilkinson, Heather Wilkinson’s husband, who survived the lunch.
The 11-week trial, held in the nearby country town of
Morwell, attracted international attention. The case has since inspired
podcasts and books.
Reuters reported that the appeal proceedings were beginning
Wednesday.
