The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Construction has begun on a check dam worth 5 million Afghanis in Kandahar province's Arghandab district, according to the Taliban's Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development.

The department said the project is being implemented in Mansourabad village to help recharge groundwater, mitigate the effects of drought and improve irrigation for agricultural land.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the department's director, Mawlawi Dost Mohammad Saeed, said the check dam is expected to benefit nearby communities by improving water availability and strengthening local water management.

According to the department, the dam will be 27 meters long, 5 meters high and will have the capacity to store 26,280 cubic meters of water.

The project follows the launch of another check dam in Arghistan district about two weeks ago, also initiated by the Taliban's Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development in Kandahar.

Such projects are considered important for improving water management, replenishing groundwater reserves and reducing the impact of recurring droughts in Afghanistan.
