The Kabul Tribune (KT) — North Korea said on Sunday that denuclearisation is an issue that has been irreversibly terminated, Reuters reported, as it condemned recent nuclear deterrence talks between the United States and South Korea.
A spokesperson for North Korea’s foreign ministry, in a statement carried by state media KCNA, said that Washington and its allies would not be able to influence Pyongyang’s status as a nuclear weapons state.
“The U.S. and its vassal forces’ meaningless rhetoric against the DPRK and cooperation in posing a nuclear threat to it can never affect the irreversible position of the DPRK as a nuclear weapons state,” the spokesperson said, using the country’s official name.
The statement added that “denuclearisation is an irreversibly finalised matter.”
The remarks come after U.S. and South Korean officials met in Seoul last week under the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG), where they discussed strengthening nuclear deterrence and readiness in response to North Korea’s expanding weapons programme.
