The Kabul Tribune (KT) — U.S. President Donald Trump says a deal to halt the war with Iran could be signed as early as Sunday, Al Jazeera reported. However, Tehran has rejected that timeline, saying an agreement could be finalized in the “coming days.”

Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would “open to all” once the deal is signed and claimed that the United States would eventually gain control over Iran’s nuclear material.

Despite expectations of an imminent agreement, reaction among Republican lawmakers has been limited. Some members of Trump’s party, however, continued to criticize Iran, insisting it should never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Republican Senator Ron Johnson said in a video published by Iran International that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose an “existential threat” to the United States. He expressed hope that Trump would succeed in preventing such an outcome, adding that Iran’s leadership “should be put on the dustbin of history.”

Republican Congressman John James told Fox News he was “excited” about the potential deal, saying Trump’s pressure had forced Tehran to the negotiating table.

“President Trump is the president of peace, but he’s also the president of strength,” James said. “And this is exactly why Tehran is coming to the table to negotiate.”

Meanwhile, Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska shared an earlier video of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, in which Carter expressed hope for a lasting relationship with Iran. Bacon said the Iranian leadership remains hostile, adding that “hope is not a strategy” and that Iran would only respond to power and resolve.
