The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Reuters reported that five people, including two teenage suspects, were killed after a shooting at a mosque in San Diego, U.S. authorities said on Monday.
Police said two teenage gunmen opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego, killing a security guard and two other men outside the mosque before the suspects were later found dead, apparently from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Scott Wahl, the city’s police chief, said local law enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were investigating the attack as a possible hate crime. Authorities have not publicly identified a specific motive.
Officials said all children attending a day school at the mosque complex were accounted for and safe following the shooting, which occurred at around 11:40 a.m. local time.
According to Wahl, the mother of one of the suspects had contacted police about two hours before the incident, reporting that her son—described as suicidal—had left home with three firearms and her vehicle.
Police said the two suspects were dressed in camouflage, prompting officers to begin searching for them at nearby locations, including a shopping mall and a high school, before reports of the mosque shooting emerged.
Authorities said they had not received any specific threat against the mosque or other locations prior to the incident, but noted concerns over what they described as generalized hate rhetoric.
The attack occurred days before Eid al-Adha and the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca
