The Kabul Tribune (KT) — United Nations has outlined the formal process for appointing its next Secretary-General, emphasizing transparency and inclusivity in line with General Assembly resolutions.

According to the UN, the selection process is guided by General Assembly resolution 79/327, adopted on 5 September 2025, which builds on earlier reforms aimed at improving how the Secretary-General is chosen under Article 97 of the UN Charter.

The process begins with a joint letter issued by the Presidents of the General Assembly and the Security Council, officially initiating the selection procedure.

Member states or groups of member states may then nominate candidates. Each nominee is required to submit a vision statement, curriculum vitae, and disclosures related to campaign financing.

The President of the General Assembly will also organize public, webcast interactive dialogues with all candidates, allowing member states and observers to assess their suitability.

The UN said the process will be conducted in a transparent and inclusive manner, with close engagement between the President of the General Assembly and member states throughout the selection period.

The reforms are intended to strengthen confidence in the selection process and ensure broader participation among UN member states.
