The Taliban on Thursday welcomed members of Afghanistan’s national volleyball team after their return from the Central Asian Volleyball Championship, where they finished runners-up, a senior sports official said.
Ahmadullah Wasiq, head of the Taliban’s General Directorate
of Physical Education and Sports, said on X (formerly Twitter) that the players
were formally received upon arrival in Kabul.
Wasiq described the team’s second-place finish as a “major
and historic achievement,” crediting it to the government’s support, the
coaches’ dedication, and the players’ “tireless efforts.”
He added that the Taliban administration would continue to
support Afghan athletes and provide the necessary facilities to help them bring
further pride to the country.
The announcement comes as some Afghan athletes have voiced
frustration over what they describe as a lack of institutional support from the
Taliban authorities.
