The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United Kingdom’s Special Envoy to Afghanistan, Richard Lindsey, said Friday that he and the UK’s Special Envoy for Women and Girls, Harriet Harman, met with Afghan women leaders in London to discuss ways to strengthen women’s rights and leadership.
In a post on X, Lindsey described the meeting as both
“productive and important,” emphasizing that the participants’ insights were
“powerful and urgent.”
The discussions focused on supporting Afghan women’s
inclusion in public life and advancing their rights amid ongoing restrictions
under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.
Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban has imposed
sweeping curbs on women’s freedoms, including bans on secondary and higher
education for girls, most employment for women, and restrictions on their
movement and public participation — policies the United Nations has described
as “gender apartheid.”
British officials have repeatedly called on the Taliban to
reverse those measures and to ensure women’s full participation in Afghan
society.
