The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The World Food Programme (WFP) has
warned that cuts or reductions in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan are putting women
and children at severe risk of malnutrition and death.
In a statement on Tuesday, November 11, John Elif, WFP’s
country director in Afghanistan, said, “Afghan women are witnessing the deaths
of their children from malnutrition while being deprived of vital assistance
and living in extremely difficult and unimaginable conditions.”
Elif stressed that now is not the time to reduce aid but for
the international community to increase support and honor commitments to stand
in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.
He also cautioned that with winter approaching, the need for
food and humanitarian assistance for vulnerable families is higher than ever.
Meanwhile, humanitarian organization World Vision reported
that 3.7 million children under the age of five in Afghanistan are suffering
from malnutrition, highlighting the growing urgency of the crisis.
