The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A child was killed and another child and their mother were injured when an unexploded shell detonated in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, Taliban officials said Thursday.
The Taliban’s provincial police command said in a statement
that the blast occurred in the Hisar Shahi village of Rodat district after
several children collecting scrap metal brought home an old shell. Family
members, unaware of the danger, reportedly threw the shell into a stove,
triggering the explosion.
Security forces responded quickly, secured the area and
transported the injured to a nearby hospital, the statement said.
Decades of war have left Afghanistan littered with land
mines and unexploded ordnance. The remnants of conflict continue to kill and
injure civilians, especially children. Aid agencies have repeatedly warned that
Afghanistan remains one of the world’s most contaminated countries for land
mines and unexploded munitions.
