The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Spin Boldak–Chaman crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan is expected to reopen soon for the transit of goods after weeks of closure, local sources said Sunday.
Officials from the Taliban Chamber of Commerce in Spin
Boldak district, in southern Kandahar province, said the crossing could reopen
for cargo trucks as early as Sunday or Monday.
A source said a 10-member delegation from the Taliban
Chamber of Commerce in Chaman visited Spin Boldak on Saturday and conveyed
assurances of safety and cooperation to Taliban officials managing the
crossing.
The closure of the key trade route has left thousands of
trucks stranded on both sides of the Durand Line. Pakistani authorities
temporarily shut down Karachi port to ease congestion caused by the halted
shipments.
Trade officials said reopening the Spin Boldak–Chaman route
is particularly important for Afghanistan’s pomegranate exports, a major
seasonal commodity.
