The Kabul Tribune (KT) — At least six people, including one Afghan national, have been executed in prisons across Iran, a human rights group said Thursday, as concerns grow over the country’s rising use of the death penalty.
The Kurdish human rights organization Hengaw said the
executions took place in prisons in Shiraz, Isfahan, Birjand and Boroujerd.
Among those executed was Hazrat Ishaqzai, an Afghan from Farah province, who
was convicted on drug-related charges, the group said.
According to data from Iran Human Rights, at least 60 Afghan
citizens have been executed in Iran since the start of 2025, a number that has
alarmed international rights organizations.
Iran has one of the highest execution rates in the world,
and rights advocates say executions of foreign nationals — particularly Afghans
— have sharply increased in recent years.
Many of those executed were convicted of drug offenses,
often after trials that lacked transparency or adequate legal representation,
rights groups say. They have repeatedly called on Iran to halt executions and
ensure fair judicial processes.
