The Kabul Tribune (KT) — India said Thursday it is prepared to work with Afghanistan on hydropower projects, including potential developments along the Kunar River, signaling a possible expansion of bilateral cooperation in the water sector.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of
External Affairs, told reporters that New Delhi’s willingness to assist was
reaffirmed in a recent joint statement issued during the visit of Amir Khan
Muttaqi, the acting foreign minister of the Taliban, to
India.
“The joint statement clearly emphasizes that India stands
ready to support Afghanistan’s efforts toward the sustainable management of its
water resources, including hydropower generation projects,” Jaiswal said at a
press briefing.
He added that India and Afghanistan share a long history of
collaboration on water initiatives, citing the Salma Dam — now known as the
India-Afghanistan Friendship Dam — as a leading example of their enduring
partnership.
