The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A vehicle carrying Afghan migrants crashed near Iran’s border with Afghanistan, killing three people and injuring seven others, Iranian state media reported Monday.
The accident occurred near the town of Taybad in Iran’s
Razavi Khorasan province when a speeding vehicle carrying undocumented Afghan
migrants collided with a cargo truck, according to the official IRNA news
agency.
IRNA said the vehicle had been carrying 10 Afghan nationals
without legal documents and was traveling on unsafe, secondary routes in an
apparent attempt to evade border forces when the crash happened.
Local officials said smuggling of undocumented migrants has
risen in Iran’s border provinces, with drivers often using high-speed and
unsafe routes to avoid police patrols — a pattern that has led to a number of
deadly accidents in recent months.
The crash comes as Iranian authorities have intensified the
mass deportation of Afghan migrants. Legal entry and visa processes have also
become increasingly restricted, leaving many Afghans — facing widespread
unemployment and economic hardship at home — to take dangerous and illegal
routes into Iran in search of work.
