The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has warned that Afghanistan faces severe environmental risks due to poor waste and water management and a lack of green spaces, which threaten public health across the country.
In a post on X on Sunday, Nov. 9, UN-Habitat Afghanistan
said that through targeted urban planning and community-based initiatives,
Afghanistan can protect its environment and improve people’s living conditions
The UN agency noted that weak environmental governance,
combined with rapid and unplanned urbanization, has exacerbated pollution and
put additional pressure on natural resources in Afghan cities.
UN-Habitat previously cautioned that urbanization in
Afghanistan is increasing at a fast pace, while most cities lack the
infrastructure and preparedness needed to accommodate such growth.
