The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban said Monday that police in western Herat province arrested a woman accused of stealing more than 3 million Afghanis (about $40,000), as economic hardship deepens for women under the regime.
According to Taliban authorities, the woman confessed to the
theft during preliminary questioning. Officials said her case has been handed
over to judicial authorities for further investigation. The recovered money,
after verification, was returned to its rightful owner, they added.
The Taliban government, which has imposed sweeping
restrictions on women’s rights since taking power in 2021, has barred most
women from working in government and nongovernmental organizations and closed
schools and universities to girls beyond sixth grade.
Rights groups say those restrictions have severely worsened
economic conditions for Afghan women, many of whom are the sole breadwinners
for their families. With limited job opportunities and growing poverty, women
across Afghanistan face increasing hardship and, in some cases, turn to
desperate means to survive.
Afghanistan’s economy remains in crisis, with widespread
unemployment and aid dependency continuing to affect millions since the
Taliban’s return to power.
