The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Afghanistan’s under-17 futsal team captured a historic victory Thursday night, defeating regional powerhouse Iran 2–1 in the final of the 2025 Asian Youth Championship to claim the country’s first-ever gold medal in the competition.
Despite Iran dominating possession with 54% of the ball and
recording 17 shots, Afghanistan capitalized on its limited opportunities,
scoring twice from seven shots on target in 12 total attempts. Strong goalkeeping
and disciplined defending secured the win for the Afghan side, which held off
sustained Iranian pressure throughout the match.
Afghanistan’s goalkeeper made five crucial saves to preserve
the lead, as Iran struggled to convert its chances despite more corners and
fewer fouls.
The victory set off jubilant celebrations online and across
social media, where Afghan fans flooded livestream comment sections with
congratulations, jokes, and expressions of national pride.
Afghanistan reached the final after a commanding 9–1 win
over Thailand in the semifinals, while Iran had advanced with a 14–2 rout of
Uzbekistan. The final proved a far tighter affair, with both sides pressing
high and exchanging rapid attacks in a display of fast-paced futsal.
Across the tournament, Afghanistan scored 30 goals and
conceded only four — a slightly better defensive record than Iran, which netted
36 and allowed six.
The victory not only underscored Afghanistan’s growing
potential in the sport but also provided a rare moment of national unity and
pride amid ongoing political and economic challenges at home.
