The Kabul Tribune (KT)— Persistent rain and a wet outfield forced the quarterfinal between Afghanistan’s Abdalyan and India at the 2026 Asian Games to be abandoned without a ball being bowled, ending Afghanistan’s campaign in the tournament.
India advanced to the semifinals because it had the higher
seeding under the tournament’s rules for rain-affected knockout matches. The
rule awards the win to the higher-seeded team when a quarterfinal is washed
out.
India, the defending Asian Games champion, entered the match
as the top-seeded team and will face either Sri Lanka or Nepal in the
semifinals.
Afghanistan had reached the quarterfinals though losing to
Nepal in the group stage. The team was unable to challenge India after rain
made play impossible.
Under the tournament rules, India can advance through the
knockout stages on seeding if subsequent matches are also abandoned because of
rain.
