The Kabul Tribune (KT) — 30 athletes have been selected for Afghanistan’s national mountaineering team following a 10-day selection competition in central Bamiyan province, organizers said.

The athletes were chosen from 90 competitors representing nine provinces who took part in the competition.

The selection event was held alongside a training camp that provided practical instruction in mountaineering. Three instructors from Iran trained Afghan participants during the program.

Organizers said 31 other participants received certificates after completing practical training and qualifying for third-level mountaineering coaching credentials.

The camp and selection competition were organized by the General Directorate of Olympics, Physical Education and Sports and the Afghanistan Mountaineering Federation.

A natural rock-climbing site was also designated for athletes to use for training. Organizers said the site is about 150 meters high and 500 meters long.

The program combined selection for the national team with practical mountaineering instruction and coaching training, with organizers seeking to develop athletes and expand technical expertise in the sport.
