The Kabul Tribune (KT) — U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton said Sunday that his office continues to help Afghans seeking to leave the country while pushing for changes to U.S. immigration policy and working to elect more Democrats to Congress.
Speaking on CBS' “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,”
Moulton said his office had helped dozens of Afghans leave Afghanistan and that
he continues to work with U.S. veterans involved in efforts to assist Afghans.
“We're still working with veterans from across the country
to get Afghans to safety,” Moulton said.
Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat and former Marine,
criticized the Trump administration's immigration policies, saying they had
effectively brought the U.S. immigration program for Afghans to a halt. He
accused the administration of pursuing discriminatory policies toward
immigrants.
Moulton said his efforts include working to change U.S.
immigration policy and supporting Afghans who assisted the United States during
its military involvement in Afghanistan.
“We should support the allies who put their lives on the
line, not just for their country, but for ours, alongside our troops,” he said.
Moulton also said he is focused on helping Democrats regain
majorities in the House and Senate. He said he is raising money through Serve
America, a political organization he has supported for years, to help
Democratic candidates compete in congressional races.
His comments come as the fate of Afghans seeking U.S.
protection remains a politically contentious issue, particularly among former
U.S. service members and advocates for Afghans who worked alongside American
forces.
