The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Afghanistan Freedom Front claimed that its fighters killed four Taliban members and wounded five others in an attack on the Taliban governor’s office and a security post in Faizabad, the capital of northeastern Badakhshan province.

The group said the attack took place at about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, when its fighters launched rockets at the Taliban governor’s office and a security post in the city.

The rocket attack was followed by an armed confrontation between Freedom Front fighters and Taliban forces that lasted about 30 minutes, according to a statement from the group. It said its fighters used rocket launchers and other weapons during the fighting.

The Afghanistan Freedom Front claimed that four Taliban members were killed and five others were wounded in the attack.

The claims could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate confirmation from Taliban authorities of the reported casualties.

The attack comes amid increased activity by anti-Taliban armed groups in Badakhshan in recent months. The Afghanistan Freedom Front has repeatedly claimed attacks against Taliban positions in the province.

In July, the group claimed that at least 21 Taliban fighters, including several commanders, were killed and 37 others wounded in clashes in Zebak district of Badakhshan. The Taliban at the time said five attackers were killed. The competing casualty claims could not be independently verified.

Badakhshan has also seen a series of attacks targeting Taliban officials. The mayor of Faizabad was killed in a vehicle explosion in August, according to Taliban officials. Two weeks earlier, the Taliban’s director of information and culture in the province was shot and killed. No group initially claimed responsibility for those attacks.

The Afghanistan Freedom Front is one of several armed groups opposed to Taliban rule. Its claims of attacks and casualties are often difficult to independently verify.
