The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The FBI marked the fourth anniversary of the disappearance of Afghan-American businessman Mahmood Shah Habibi on Sunday, renewing its appeal for information about his whereabouts.
Habibi disappeared near his home in Kabul on Aug. 10, 2022.
The FBI said he was taken from his vehicle by the Taliban’s General Directorate
of Intelligence along with his driver and 29 other employees of Asia
Consultancy Group, a Kabul-based telecommunications company.
Habibi, who worked as a consultant for the company at the
time, has not been heard from since his detention. The Taliban has not provided
information about his condition or whereabouts, according to the FBI.
“The FBI remains committed to bringing Mahmood home to his
loved ones, including his daughter who hasn’t seen her father since before her
first birthday,” said Michael Burgwald, special agent in charge of the FBI
Washington Field Office’s Counterterrorism Division.
“If you have information about his whereabouts, please
contact the FBI. Help us finish this investigation. Help us reunite this
family,” Burgwald said.
Habibi previously served as Afghanistan’s director of civil
aviation before working as a consultant for Asia Consultancy Group.
The FBI Washington Field Office released a missing-persons
poster for Habibi in 2025 as part of its continuing investigation into his
disappearance.
The U.S. State Department has offered a reward of up to $5
million for information leading to Habibi’s location, recovery and return.
The FBI is asking anyone with information about Habibi’s
disappearance or detention to submit a tip through its website or contact a
local FBI office or the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate.
The FBI said tips can be submitted confidentially.
