The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Two more bodies were recovered in Parun, the capital of Nuristan province, bringing the death toll from recent floods in the province to 24, a Taliban provincial spokesman said.

Fereydun Samim said the two bodies were found Saturday, Aug. 1, on the 13th day of search and rescue operations. Both victims were men, he said.

The floods struck Parun on July 20, causing deaths and extensive damage across the province. The disaster has caused an estimated $35 million in financial losses, according to local Taliban officials.

The number of casualties and the scale of economic losses have continued to rise as search and rescue operations remain underway. Nuristan is considered highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly floods and landslides, because of its mountainous terrain.
