The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, has accused the United States and Israel of being the main culprits behind the current global situation, criticizing U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres for not explicitly naming them in recent remarks on the erosion of international law.
Baghaei made the remarks in response to Guterres' recent comments about the growing disregard for international law, rising impunity and the preference for military solutions over political ones. Guterres has warned that international legal norms are being challenged and that impunity is on the rise.
Addressing the U.N. chief, Baghaei asked why he had refrained from condemning those who, in Iran's view, have enabled "absolute impunity" for perpetrators of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and aggression.
Baghaei also criticized Guterres for failing to identify the United States and Israel as the "main culprits" responsible for the current situation.
His comments come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over Tehran's nuclear program, U.S. sanctions and Washington's support for Israel.
