The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban's Ministry of Interior says it has signed an agreement with the Taliban's Ministry of Mines and Petroleum to provide security for four of Afghanistan's key economic projects.

According to a ministry statement released on July 23, 2026, the agreement assigns the Ministry of Interior's Public Protection Security Enterprise to secure the Mes Aynak copper mine, the Badakhshan lapis lazuli mine, the Sheberghan–Mazar gas pipeline, and the Amu Darya oil project using trained security personnel.

The ministry said the agreement aims to create a secure environment for the implementation of the projects, support investment and facilitate the development of Afghanistan's natural resources.

The Taliban have stepped up efforts in recent years to attract domestic and foreign investment in the country's mining, energy and transit sectors. The Mes Aynak copper mine, Amu Darya oil project and Badakhshan lapis lazuli mine are among Afghanistan's largest resource development projects, which Taliban officials say are expected to boost investment, create jobs and contribute to economic growth.
