The Kabul Tribune (KT) — U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said artificial intelligence must never undermine human rights, human dignity or equality, stressing that people—not machines—must remain responsible for decisions with significant consequences.
In a post on X, Guterres said, "Human rights are not negotiable. AI must never strip away dignity or entrench discrimination."
He added that while artificial intelligence can assist decision-making, humans must retain ultimate authority and accountability in critical sectors such as justice, healthcare and policing.
"In every high-stakes decision—in justice, in healthcare, in policing—machines can inform, but humans must decide and answer," Guterres said.
The United Nations has repeatedly called for the responsible development and governance of artificial intelligence, warning that the technology should be used in ways that respect human rights, promote transparency and accountability, and avoid discrimination or harm.
