The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Senior Taliban officials have traveled to Iran to attend the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's former supreme leader, according to the Taliban administration.

The Taliban's Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs said Thursday that Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar departed for Iran to participate in the funeral ceremonies. Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi is accompanying him on the visit.

Iranian media have reported that Khamenei's funeral and burial ceremonies are scheduled to begin on Saturday.

Khamenei was killed about four months ago in airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel.

The visit underscores the continued engagement between the Taliban administration and Iran. Despite the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Tehran has maintained political and economic ties with the group, and officials from both sides have held regular meetings.

Iran, however, has not formally recognized the Taliban administration as Afghanistan's government.
