The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Hannah Neumann, a member of the European Parliament, said that deporting migrants to Afghanistan could not only fail to improve security but may also contribute to strengthening the Taliban and expanding terrorism.
In a post on the social media platform X, Neumann said the process would place heavy pressure on people and lead to negative consequences.
She emphasized that if European countries genuinely value security, they should align their migration policies with broader foreign policy considerations.
According to Neumann, returning migrants to Afghanistan could push some individuals toward Taliban-linked structures, including networks and religious schools.
Her remarks come as several European countries have accelerated the deportation of Afghan migrants in recent months.
Human rights organizations have warned that returning migrants to Afghanistan—particularly given the country’s current political and economic situation—could increase the risk of social instability and a humanitarian crisis.
Western countries, meanwhile, are tightening migration policies amid security concerns and domestic political pressure, though critics argue that such measures could have long-term negative security consequences.
