The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Le Monde reported that the Kremlin said Tuesday, May 12, 2026, there is no concrete plan to end the war in Ukraine, days after Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the conflict could be nearing its end.
Fighting resumed overnight between Russian and Ukrainian forces following the expiration of a three-day ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, with both sides accusing each other of violations.
Putin had said over the weekend that the war was “heading to an end,” though he provided no details. Trump echoed similar optimism, stating that the end of the conflict was “getting closer” and suggesting he might visit Russia later this year.
However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that there are “no specifics” regarding any potential peace agreement. He said Russia remains open to dialogue and that some groundwork has been laid through trilateral contacts, but concrete details are still lacking.
Peskov added that Putin would only agree to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky outside Russia if a final peace deal were to be signed.
The remarks come amid continued uncertainty over negotiations, which have so far failed to produce a breakthrough, while Russia maintains its demands in the conflict.
Meanwhile, Ukraine said Russia launched more than 200 drones after the ceasefire ended, targeting energy infrastructure and residential areas and killing at least four people. A strike in Kryvyi Rih reportedly killed two civilians and seriously injured a child.
Russia, in turn, said its air defense systems intercepted dozens of Ukrainian drones and accused Kyiv of resuming attacks, including a strike on a train station in the Bryansk region that injured two railway workers.
Ukrainian authorities also announced partial evacuations in frontline areas of the Dnipropetrovsk region, as fighting intensified again following the ceasefire’s collapse.
Zelensky called for an end to the war, saying Russia must take steps toward a “real, lasting ceasefire.”
