The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Pakistan and Bangladesh signed a memorandum of understanding Saturday to strengthen bilateral cooperation against drug trafficking and narcotics abuse, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry said.

The agreement was signed in Dhaka by Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed during Naqvi’s visit to the Bangladeshi capital, according to a ministry statement.

Under the agreement, the two countries pledged to cooperate in preventing the smuggling and illegal transportation of narcotics and to work jointly to combat drug abuse and its social impacts.

The ministry said both sides agreed to develop a joint strategy to dismantle drug trafficking and distribution networks. Relevant agencies from the two countries will also exchange intelligence and information on traffickers and trafficking operations.

The agreement includes cooperation in personnel training, the use of modern technology and the sharing of best practices for narcotics prevention, the statement said.

Naqvi also offered Pakistan’s support for Bangladesh’s Safe City project during talks with Ahmed.

“We will support the government of Bangladesh in the project in every possible way,” Naqvi said, according to the ministry.

The two ministers also discussed expanding cooperation in internal security, counterterrorism, human trafficking prevention, cybercrime, organized crime and financial fraud.

The ministry said both sides agreed to enhance collaboration in training programs for police academy officers and civil armed forces personnel.

Naqvi invited Ahmed to visit Pakistan, while the Bangladeshi minister thanked Pakistan for its offer of assistance on the Safe City initiative.
