The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban say oil extraction has started from five newly drilled wells in the Amu Darya oil basin in northern Afghanistan.
Humayun Afghan, spokesman for the Taliban-controlled Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, said the extraction is taking place in the Zamarud Sai area of the Amu Darya oil basin in Jowzjan province.
He wrote on X that production began on Monday during a visit by senior Taliban officials to the province.
The delegation included Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Minister of Mines and Petroleum Mullah Hidayatullah Badri, and other officials.
According to Humayun Afghan, the five wells are expected to produce around 500 cubic meters of crude oil daily.
The Taliban have recently focused on expanding extraction activities in Afghanistan’s hydrocarbon-rich regions, particularly in the Amu Darya basin, which is considered one of the country’s key energy resources.
