The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister’s Office for Economic Affairs said construction has begun on a cement production plant in the Yatim Taq area of Jawzjan Province.

According to the office, the project will be built under a contract between the Taliban’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and a Turkish construction firm, with an investment of $160 million and a planned completion period of two years.

Officials from the Ministry of Mines said the plant will have a daily production capacity of 3,000 metric tons of cement and is expected to create around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs once operational.

Taliban Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdul Ghani Baradar said during the ceremony launching the project that efforts are underway to make Afghanistan self-sufficient in cement production and reduce reliance on imports.

Meanwhile, the Taliban’s Minister of Mines and Petroleum Hedayatullah Badri said that cement production is also expected to begin in Kandahar Province after the upcoming Eid al-Adha, marking another step toward industrial development in the country
