The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Taliban Supreme Court has carried out corporal punishments against five individuals in Afghanistan’s Zabul and Maidan Wardak provinces over various charges, according to an official statement.
In Zabul province, a man in Shah Joy district was punished after being convicted of theft by a primary court. He was sentenced to three years in prison and 39 lashes, a ruling later approved by the Taliban Supreme Court and subsequently enforced.
Separately, in Sayedabad district of Maidan Wardak province, four individuals, including one woman, were publicly punished after being convicted of adultery and sodomy, according to the court’s statement.
The individuals were each sentenced to two years in prison and 39 lashes. The punishments were implemented after they accepted the court’s ruling and it was confirmed by the Taliban Supreme Court.
The Taliban have in recent years repeatedly carried out public floggings of convicted individuals, actions that have drawn criticism from human rights groups and the international community.
