The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Chinese President Xi Jinping has rejected any possibility of Taiwan independence, saying Beijing “absolutely will not tolerate” it and reaffirming China’s position that Taiwan is part of “one China.”
According to a CNN report, Xi made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Cheng Li-wun, chair of Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), who is currently visiting China on what she described as a peace-focused trip aimed at reducing tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
Xi said people on both sides of the strait are “one family” and should pursue peace, cooperation, and eventual “reunification.” He also blamed Taiwan independence supporters for increasing tensions in the region.
The comments come as China continues to pressure Taiwan militarily and diplomatically, while refusing formal dialogue with Taiwan’s government led by President Lai Ching-te and the **Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims.
Taiwan’s ruling party criticized the visit, warning that opposition engagement with Beijing could weaken Taiwan’s defense posture at a sensitive time.
