The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has criticized remarks made by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres regarding the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

In a post on X, Baghaei said the situation should be described as an “unprovoked act of aggression” against Iran by the United States and Israel, rather than simply “fighting.”

He added that Iran had been engaged in “serious diplomatic negotiations” when the alleged attacks took place, claiming it was the second time in nine months that the U.S. and Israel had carried out such actions.

The Iranian spokesperson also criticized the UN chief’s concern about risks to the global economy, saying the focus should also include civilian casualties. He claimed that 175 civilians, including children, were killed in the city of Minab, and that many others had been killed or injured across Iran during what he described as seven days of American and Israeli attacks.

Baghaei called on the United Nations to be “forthright” and to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities regarding what he described as an “illegal war on Iran.”

Earlier, Guterres warned that unlawful attacks in the Middle East were causing significant suffering for civilians and could pose serious risks to the global economy, particularly for vulnerable populations. He also cautioned that the situation could spiral beyond anyone’s control.
