The Kabul Tribune (KT) - At least 30 people have died after heavy rains hit Brazil’s southeastern state of Minas Gerais, while 39 others remain missing, local authorities said, according to Reuters.
The state fire department confirmed the deaths occurred in the cities of Juiz de Fora and Uba, about 110 km apart. Flooding and landslides triggered by the rains have displaced about 440 people in Juiz de Fora and forced the suspension of classes in municipal schools.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences in a post on X, saying, “Our focus is to ensure humanitarian assistance, the restoration of basic services, support for displaced people, and aid for reconstruction.”
Specialized teams have been mobilized to respond to incidents and search for missing people. The state fire department said 134 officials were deployed to Juiz de Fora and Uba. A firefighter on the ground, Gabriel Vitor, described the situation as “precarious,” but said authorities are hopeful that continued efforts will help locate everyone.
