The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Today, Wednesday, February 11, marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of providing equal opportunities for women and girls in scientific fields. He said every girl should be able to envision a future in science, and every woman should have the chance to advance in her scientific career.
Guterres noted that women still make up less than one-third of researchers worldwide, with very limited participation in advanced fields such as artificial intelligence and quantum science—gaps that hinder global innovation and scientific progress.
This year’s observance focuses on integrating AI, social sciences, STEM, and finance to reduce gender barriers, strengthen women-led startups, and ensure equal access to education and scientific opportunities. Guterres encouraged the next generation of women scientists to actively participate in shaping the future of science.
On his social media, he wrote: “Equality in the sciences is essential for humanity’s progress. Despite advances in access to education, only one in three researchers is female. Let’s ensure that women and girls can realize their scientific ambitions—for their rights and for the benefit of all.”
