The Kabul Tribune (KT) - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) says nearly 50,000 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members in 2024.
According to UNODC data, a total of 83,000 women and girls were intentionally killed globally during the year, meaning about 60 percent of the victims were murdered by someone close to them. On average, 137 women and girls were killed every day as a result of domestic or family-related violence.
UNODC said the slightly lower figure compared to 2023 does not indicate a real decline in killings but is largely due to gaps in data availability in some countries.
The report shows that this form of violence affects all regions of the world. Africa recorded the highest number and rate of such killings, followed by the Americas and Oceania, while Asia and Europe reported lower rates.
UNODC stressed that most women killed in domestic settings were murdered by their intimate partners, highlighting the urgent need for stronger measures to prevent domestic and gender-based violence.
