The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that neither Russia nor China has any intention of taking control of Greenland, and that the United States is fully aware of this.

Speaking at his annual news conference summarizing Russia’s diplomatic activities in 2025, Lavrov dismissed rumors about Moscow’s interest in Greenland, saying: “We don’t have any involvement whatsoever in plans to seize Greenland, and I have no doubt that Washington is fully aware that neither Russia nor the People’s Republic of China has any such plans.”

Lavrov added that many Russian citizens were unfamiliar with Greenland until the topic suddenly appeared in news headlines. He also noted that any decision regarding Greenland falls under NATO’s purview, saying, “It remains to be seen how this issue will be resolved.”

The remarks come amid pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who repeatedly suggested that the United States should take over Greenland from Denmark, citing national security concerns. Trump’s proposals have alarmed European allies in NATO, as he warned that the U.S. would act to prevent Russia or China from occupying the territory amid growing geopolitical competition in the Arctic.
