The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Thousands of protesters gathered in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, chanting “Greenland is not for sale,” as U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his initiative to acquire the island, according to Fox News. The demonstration is reportedly the largest in the nation’s history.
Protesters marched toward the American consulate to express
opposition to the idea of selling or transferring control of the territory,
emphasizing Greenland’s sovereignty and local decision-making. Similar protests
also took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, with demonstrators using slogans such
as “Hands off Greenland” and “Make America Go Away.”
The rallies come after President Trump doubled down on his
efforts to pursue Greenland, warning of potential tariffs up to 25% on European
imports if agreements were not reached. European Union leaders, including
Ursula von der Leyen, criticized the move, calling for attention to Europe’s
economic independence and stability.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also commented that
NATO relations are being tested over Greenland, highlighting rising tensions
among allied nations. Greenlandic officials stated firmly that the island is
“neither for sale nor subject to any foreign ownership” and affirmed their
continued autonomy in coordination with Denmark.
The protests, which have gained international attention,
underscore widespread public resistance to the U.S. plan and signal potential
diplomatic and economic ramifications on a global scale.
