The Kabul Tribune (KT) — U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act — a rarely used federal law that allows the deployment of U.S. military forces domestically — in response to ongoing protests and clashes in Minneapolis, CNN and other outlets report.
Trump’s warning came as state and federal officials continue
to clash over tactics used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents
in the city, where nationwide protests have followed controversial enforcement
actions.
According to reports, another incident in Minneapolis saw a
federal officer shoot and injure a man in the leg after the officer and others
were allegedly attacked with a snow shovel and broom handle during an
enforcement operation.
Local leaders have called for calm in the wake of the
shooting, which occurred about a week after ICE agents fatally shot Renee
Nicole Good — a fatal encounter that sparked widespread demonstrations and
renewed scrutiny of federal immigration tactics.
In the legal arena, a judge declined to issue a temporary
restraining order in a lawsuit filed by Minnesota and the Twin Cities against
federal officials, which argued that the immigration enforcement operation
involved warrantless arrests and excessive force.
Under the Insurrection Act, the president could potentially
deploy active-duty troops or federalize the National Guard to enforce order if
state authorities are deemed unable or unwilling to do so, but such federal
action would mark a significant escalation in the federal response to the
unrest.
Tensions remain high as state leaders, including Minnesota
officials, push back against the federal approach and urge restraint while the
situation continues to unfold
