The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Uzbekistan has launched feasibility and study work for the Afghan-Trans railway project after resolving regulatory issues related to the initiative, according to the Uzbek Trend news agency.
The agency reported that the studies are being carried out
in cooperation with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan, adding that 24
transport and logistics hubs have also been designated in Uzbekistan to support
the planned railway line.
The proposed railway route will extend from Termez in
Uzbekistan, pass through Mazar-e-Sharif and Logar provinces in Afghanistan, and
continue to the Kharlachi area of Pakistan. The railway is planned to span a
total length of 573 kilometers.
Once completed, the railway is expected to have the capacity
to transport up to 20 million metric tons of goods annually, significantly
facilitating transit trade among Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
Officials say the project would help ease regional transit,
improve connectivity and substantially reduce transportation costs for goods
moving across the three countries.
