The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said he wants a new meeting with US President Donald Trump as talks continue on efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters, the discussions are focused on two of the most difficult issues in the negotiations, as Kyiv faces pressure from Washington to move toward peace while insisting on strong security guarantees from its allies.

Ukraine has rejected Russian demands to give up the eastern Donetsk region and surrender control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Reuters said.

Speaking to reporters via WhatsApp, Zelenskiy said he wants to meet Trump again soon to assess his openness to a Ukrainian proposal under which the United States would guarantee Ukraine’s security for more than 15 years if a ceasefire is reached.

Zelenskiy also urged the United States to increase pressure on Russia, which he said has been unresponsive to the US-backed peace initiative and continues large-scale air attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.

“The Americans, in my view, are being productive right now; we have good results,” Zelenskiy was quoted by Reuters as saying. “They need to put pressure on Russia. They have the tools, and they know how to use them.”

Zelenskiy also suggested that Washington could take action against Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying such a move could cause Moscow to reconsider its position.

Meanwhile, talks held in Paris this week resulted in commitments from Ukraine’s allies to support a ceasefire with security measures, including the possible deployment of multinational troops. However, Zelenskiy said the political commitments have not yet been turned into legally binding guarantees approved by national parliaments, according to Reuters.
