The Kabul Tribune (KT) — One person was shot and killed in Minneapolis on Wednesday during an incident involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, according to the Department of Homeland Security, as reported by CNN.
The shooting comes amid a surge of federal immigration
enforcement in Minnesota as part of a nationwide crackdown under the
administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. CNN cited two law enforcement
sources as saying that around 2,000 federal immigration agents were being
deployed to Minneapolis.
According to officials, the fatal shooting involved an ICE
agent, though further details about the circumstances of the incident have not
yet been released.
The incident coincided with testimony by Minnesota state
lawmakers at a Republican-led U.S. House Oversight Committee hearing in
Washington, D.C., where allegations of fraud and misuse of federal funds in the
state were being discussed.
The congressional hearing follows the release of a video by
a conservative content creator highlighting long-standing allegations of
welfare fraud in Minnesota. In response, federal authorities have frozen child
care payments to the state and given Minnesota officials until Friday to provide
detailed information about service providers and recipients.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, has withdrawn his
reelection bid amid the growing controversy, CNN reported.
