The Kabul Tribune (KT) - Tesla has lost its position as the world’s largest electric vehicle maker to China’s BYD after its annual sales declined for a second consecutive year, Reuters reported.
Global electric vehicle sales rose 28% last year, but BYD outsold Tesla for the first time on an annual basis, supported by strong growth in Europe.
Tesla’s sales fell about 8.6% in 2025 amid rising competition, the expiration of U.S. tax credits, and backlash against the brand.
The company is facing increased pressure in Europe as CEO Elon Musk shifts focus toward robotaxis and humanoid robots. Tesla shares fell about 2% in afternoon trading, according to Reuters.
