The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Sani Obaidullah, a prominent singer from Afghanistan’s southern region, has died after a prolonged illness, his family said.
Obaidullah, who had been battling brain cancer for a long time, passed away at around 11 a.m. on Thursday, according to a family member who spoke to The Kabul Tribune.
The family member said extensive efforts were made to treat him both inside Afghanistan and abroad, but his condition did not improve.
He added that Obaidullah’s funeral will be held in Malid village of Takhtapul district in Kandahar city.
Obaidullah, who had been active in music for nearly two decades, was widely known across the country for his songs.
After the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, he stopped performing music professionally and only recited vocals at private gatherings, sources said.
