The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says small businesses are one of the few remaining avenues for Afghan women to participate in economic activities.

On Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, the UNDP tweeted that it has supported more than 89,000 businesses across Afghanistan, 91 percent of which are led by women.

The program has helped create over 439,000 job opportunities and played a significant role in supporting family livelihoods, particularly for women, the UNDP added.

Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, strict restrictions on women’s work, education, and economic activities have drastically reduced formal employment opportunities for women across the country.
