The Kabul Tribune (KT) — The Afghanistan Humanitarian Trust Fund (AHTF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have signed a US$1 million grant agreement funded by the Saudi Fund for Development to support agriculture and food security efforts in Afghanistan.
The project, to be implemented by the ICRC in partnership with the Afghan Red Crescent Society, will help smallholder farmers improve agricultural practices, strengthen resilience, and increase income opportunities. It includes cash-for-work programs for rehabilitating irrigation and land-protection infrastructure, as well as capacity-building grants and technical training.
AHTF, managed by the Islamic Development Bank, was established in 2021 to channel humanitarian assistance and promote self-reliance in Afghanistan.
ICRC’s Afghanistan head of delegation Katharina Ritz said the initiative would improve immediate food supplies while supporting long-term stability. IsDB official Dr. Walid Abdelwahab praised the Saudi contribution, saying it would help thousands of Afghan families build economic resilience.
The project is expected to assist more than 10,000 people, support 761 farming households, and provide specialized agricultural training to farmers across eastern, northern, and northeastern Afghanistan.
