The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Govardhan Asrani, a veteran Bollywood actor best known for his comic roles in Hindi cinema, died Monday in Mumbai at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness, according to Indian media reports.
His personal assistant, Babubhai, confirmed the actor’s death to India Today, saying Asrani had been admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days earlier due to fluid accumulation in his lungs.
“Asrani Sahab was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days ago. From what the doctors told us, there was water in his lungs,” Babubhai said. “He died today, October 20, around 3:30 p.m. The last rites have already been completed.”
Reports said Asrani’s family held a private funeral at the Santacruz Crematorium and released news of his death only afterward. According to media outlets, the actor had asked his wife, Manju, not to turn his death into a public event.
Born in Jaipur, Asrani enjoyed a career spanning more than
five decades, appearing in over 350 films and taking on occasional directing
roles. He was celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and memorable
performances in films such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, and Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar.
