The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Health officials in southern Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province have confirmed a new case of polio, raising the country’s total to nine so far this year.
The infection was detected in the Langar area of Chora
district, where an 8-month-old girl tested positive for the virus, according to
officials with the Taliban-run Health Ministry.
Authorities said the child’s family had previously refused
vaccination. A medical team was sent to the area and confirmed that one of the
girl’s arms had been paralyzed due to the disease.
Afghanistan has recorded nine polio cases across six
provinces in 2025 — three in Helmand, two in Paktika, and one each in Farah,
Nuristan, Uruzgan, and another unspecified province.
Globally, 38 cases of polio have been reported this year,
health officials said. Afghanistan has also detected 55 environmental samples
that tested positive for the virus.
